This item appeared in The Textbook Letter for November-December 1990.
It accompanied Part 1 of a two-part report on the development of the
State of California's science framework of 1990, a curriculum document
that was intended to reshape science instruction in California schools.

What Is Creationism?

Our article on California's science framework refers several times to "creationists" or "creationism." Creationism is a fundamentalist movement that seeks to impose onto the entire population, by political means, a religion that revolves around the creation stories in the Holy Bible. The creationists want ultimately to abolish natural science and to replace it with a system for affirming biblical narratives. Readers must recognize that "creationist" is not a general term for anyone who believes that the universe originated in a divine act. Millions of people hold that belief without concluding that it requires the eradication of science.
