Pearson's New Schoolbook Enterprise

William J. Bennetta

Pearson PLC, a corporation based in London, has acquired all of Simon & Schuster's schoolbook operations. These include Prentice Hall, Silver Burdett Ginn, Globe Fearon Educational Publisher, and Modern Curriculum Press. Pearson also owns Addison Wesley Longman (AWL), a major schoolbook company that was formed in 1995 by the merger of the Addison-Wesley Publishing Company with Longman Publishers. AWL's imprints include ScottForesman and Addison-Wesley and Scott Foresman - Addison Wesley.

In November, Pearson announced that it would combine its newly acquired Simon & Schuster operations with AWL. The resulting enterprise will be called Pearson Education and will be headquartered in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey.

William J. Bennetta is a professional editor, a fellow of the California Academy of Sciences, the president of The Textbook League, and the editor of The Textbook Letter. He writes often about the propagation of quackery, false "science" and false "history" in schoolbooks.
