Pearson's New Schoolbook Enterprise
William J. Bennetta
Pearson PLC, a corporation based in London, has acquired all of Simon
& Schuster's schoolbook operations. These include Prentice Hall,
Silver Burdett Ginn, Globe Fearon Educational Publisher, and Modern
Curriculum Press. Pearson also owns Addison Wesley Longman (AWL), a
major schoolbook company that was formed in 1995 by the merger of the
Addison-Wesley Publishing Company with Longman Publishers. AWL's
imprints include ScottForesman and Addison-Wesley and
Scott Foresman - Addison Wesley.
In November, Pearson announced that it would combine its newly
acquired Simon & Schuster operations with AWL. The resulting
enterprise will be called Pearson Education and will be headquartered
in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey.
William J. Bennetta is a professional editor, a fellow of the
California Academy of Sciences, the president of The Textbook League,
